Pupils at Gawthorpe J&I School have been joined by five life-sized characters to help them understand the dangers of drug use......

Five puppets have been bought by the school to use in social emotional aspects of learning (SEAL), a government initiative which aims to promote positive behaviour.

Teachers will use the puppets, which were bought with a £250 grant from Ossett and Horbury Rotary Phoenix Club, for drama workshops to encourage healthy living.

Sue Vickerman, headteacher at the school, said: “There are various stories teachers can use with the puppets. We expect them to be used in classrooms on a regular basis. The children will come up with their own suggestions about what each character can do.

“It is to develop emotional literacy with the children and help them take responsibility for making their own decisions. The idea is that they are more aware of what they are doing so they can make the right choices.”

Bill Sutton, from Ossett and Horbury Rotary Phoenix Club, said: “It is a grant we give to two schools in the area each year. This year we decided to help them buy resources for drugs awareness education. It is something that has been identified as a problem that affects young people and the earlier we can have some influence on that the better. It works in tandem with other things we do to encourage young people to be involved in healthy lifestyles and sporting activities.”
